Are You Making These Common Christian Spiritual Growth Mistakes? (And How Faith-Based Coaching Can Help)

Have you ever felt like you’re running a spiritual marathon in heavy work boots? You’re doing "all the things", reading your Bible, showing up to small group, hitting the "Amen" at the right times, but inside, you feel completely stuck. You’re waiting for that breakthrough, that deep sense of peace, or that clear direction from God, but it feels like there’s a glass ceiling between you and the growth you’re craving.

If that’s you, I want you to take a deep breath. You aren’t a "bad Christian," and God isn't hiding from you. Most of the time, when we feel stagnant in our faith, it’s because we’ve accidentally fallen into a few common traps that hinder our progress. At Grace in the Breaking, I see these patterns every day. We think we’re growing, but we’re actually just busy.

Let’s look at some of the most common Christian spiritual growth mistakes and how faith-based coaching can help you pivot from frustration to fruitfulness.

1. Focusing on Behavior Instead of Heart Transformation

One of the biggest mistakes believers make is trying to "fix" themselves from the outside in. We focus on the sin, the habit, or the bad attitude, and we try to use sheer willpower to change it. While discipline is a good thing, a "do better, try harder" approach usually leads to burnout and shame.

Jesus was very clear that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. If we aren't addressing the heart, we're just painting the leaves of a dying tree green. Real growth comes from biblical inner healing, where we allow the Holy Spirit to go deep into the root systems of our lives to heal the wounds that drive our unhealthy behaviors.

When you shift from performance-based living to presence-based living, everything changes. You stop asking "How do I stop doing this?" and start asking "Lord, what is in my heart that makes me feel I need this?" This is where christian life coaching becomes a game-changer. It helps you identify those heart-level blockages so you can experience true transformation.

2. The "DIY" Spirituality Trap

We live in an individualistic culture that tells us we can figure everything out on our own. We think, “I have the Bible and the Holy Spirit; I don’t need anyone else.” While it’s true that the Holy Spirit is our ultimate Counselor, God designed the Body of Christ to function together.

Isolation is the enemy’s favorite playground. When we try to navigate our spiritual battles alone, we lose perspective. We can’t see our own blind spots. This is why many people find themselves repeating the same unhealthy cycles for decades.

Faith-based coaching provides the outside perspective and accountability you need to break those cycles. It’s about having someone walk beside you who can say, "Hey, I think you’re missing something here," or "Let’s look at what God is actually saying about this situation." You weren't meant to carry the weight of your "breaking season" by yourself.

3. Ignoring the Need for Biblical Inner Healing and Deliverance

Many Christians are taught that once they are saved, all their past trauma, generational patterns, and spiritual bondages just magically disappear. While we are new creations in Christ, our souls (our mind, will, and emotions) still need to be brought into alignment with that truth.

If you find yourself constantly triggered, struggling with the same "besetting sins," or feeling a heavy weight of oppression that you can't shake, you might need to explore spiritual healing and deliverance. This isn't scary or "extra-biblical": it is a core part of the ministry of Jesus.

Ignoring the spiritual roots of your struggles is like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. You have to get to the source. Through coaching, we work on identifying those open doors and closed heart-spaces, using Scripture and prayer to bring the light of Christ into the dark corners.

4. Misunderstanding the Process of Renewing Your Mind

We often quote Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." But how many of us actually know how to do that practically?

Renewing your mind isn't just about memorizing a few verses (though that helps!). It’s about a total overhaul of your belief system. Many of us are trying to build a "Christian life" on top of a foundation of worldly lies: lies about our worth, lies about God's character, and lies about our purpose.

A renewing your mind bible strategy involves identifying specific "strongholds": patterns of thought that argue against the knowledge of God: and systematically replacing them with Truth. In coaching sessions, we dive deep into these thought patterns. We look at the "tapes" playing in your head and ask: Is this what God says about you? If not, it has to go.

5. Mistaking "Hearing" for "Listening"

We often complain that God is silent, but usually, the world is just too loud. A major mistake in spiritual growth is not creating the space to actually hear and discern God’s voice. We treat prayer like a monologue: a grocery list of demands we drop off at God’s feet before running off to our busy day.

Hearing God's voice requires intentionality and a quieted spirit. It requires learning the language of the Spirit. One of the goals of my coaching is to help you clear the "static" of anxiety, fear, and busy-ness so you can recognize the Shepherd’s voice with clarity.

When you learn to hear Him, you stop guessing and start following. You move from a place of "I hope I'm doing the right thing" to "I know my Father is leading me."

How Faith-Based Coaching Breaks the Cycle

If you’ve recognized yourself in any of these mistakes, don’t be discouraged. Recognition is the first step toward freedom. This is exactly why Grace in the Breaking exists.

Unlike secular coaching, which often focuses on self-actualization and "manifesting" your own destiny, faith-based coaching is about surrender. It’s about getting out of the way so God can do what only He can do. It’s about finding the grace that is hidden in the "breaking" seasons of our lives.

Whether you're dealing with a difficult transition, a spiritual plateau, or a deep-seated need for biblical inner healing, having a coach provides:

  • Biblical Strategy: We don't just talk about feelings; we look at what the Word says and create a roadmap for obedience.
  • Encouragement: There are days when the "breaking" feels like too much. You need someone to remind you that the breaking is where the oil and the wine come from.
  • Accountability: It’s easy to make a resolution to pray more. It’s harder to actually do it when life gets messy. Coaching keeps you focused on your spiritual goals.

If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels and start moving forward, I invite you to look into our 3 Day Intensive. This is a deep-dive, concentrated experience designed to help you break through the noise, heal from the past, and get the spiritual clarity you’ve been praying for. It’s three days of intentional focus on your soul, guided by the Holy Spirit.

You don't have to stay stuck. There is grace for the growth, and there is a way forward. Sometimes, you just need a little help to see the path God has already laid out for you.
