Why You’re Still Playing Small (And How to Finally Step into Your Calling)

Have you ever had that nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach, the one that whispers you were made for more than what you’re currently doing? Maybe you’re sitting in a meeting, or folding laundry, or even standing on a stage, and yet there’s this quiet itch that says, "I’m holding back."

At Grace in the Breaking, we see this all the time. We call it "playing small." It’s that invisible ceiling we build over our own lives to stay safe, stay liked, and stay comfortable. But here’s the truth: God didn’t design you for comfort; He designed you for a calling.

If you feel like you’re living a "lite" version of the life God intended for you, you aren’t alone. But it is time to figure out why you’re staying in the shallow end when you were built for the deep.

The Comfort of the Winepress

Think about Gideon in the Bible. When we first meet him, he’s threshing wheat in a winepress. If you know anything about farming in the ancient world, you know that you thresh wheat on a hilltop so the wind can catch the chaff. You use a winepress to stomp grapes. Gideon was literally hiding in a hole because he was afraid of the Midianites.

He was playing small. He was playing safe.

And yet, the Angel of the Lord appeared and called him a "mighty man of valor." Gideon didn’t feel like a mighty man. He felt like a guy hiding in a hole. We often wait to feel like our calling before we step into it, but God names us based on who He created us to be, not based on where we are currently hiding.

Why We Stay Small

Why do we do it? Why do we settle for a life that feels a size too small? Usually, it’s because playing small serves a purpose. It protects us.

1. The Fear of Visibility

When you step into your calling, people see you. And when people see you, they can judge you. As long as you stay small, you’re invisible to critics. You’re safe from the "Who does she think she is?" comments. But playing small to avoid judgment is like starving yourself to death so nobody can comment on what you’re eating. It’s a self-imposed prison.

2. Present Circumstances Limit Future Thinking

One of the biggest reasons we play small is that we look at our current struggles and assume they are our permanent capacity. You might think, "If I’m struggling to manage my home right now, how could I ever lead a ministry?" or "If I’m this anxious over a small decision, how could I handle a big calling?"

You are discrediting your future maturity and growth. You are confusing your current capacity with your future capability. God doesn’t just give you a calling; He gives you the grace to grow into it.

3. The Imposter Syndrome Trap

Imposter syndrome is that voice that says you’re a fraud. It tells you that if people really knew your mess, they wouldn't listen to a word you say. But here is the secret: your mess is often the very soil your calling grows in. At Grace in the Breaking, we believe that the "breaking" seasons are exactly where God does His best work.

The Cost of Staying Small

Staying small feels safe, but it’s actually incredibly expensive. It costs you your peace. It costs you the fulfillment that comes from operating in your spiritual gifts.

When you play small, you miss out on the full spectrum of the human experience God intended for you. You miss the growth that only comes through challenge. More importantly, the people you were meant to serve miss out on the gift that is you. Your calling isn't just about your personal satisfaction; it’s about the contribution you were designed to make to the Kingdom.

If you are underserving, under-earning, or underperforming relative to what God has placed in your heart, your spirit will remain unsettled. That "itch" won't go away until you say yes to the bigger space God is calling you into.

How to Step into Your Calling

So, how do we stop hiding in the winepress? How do we move from "just getting by" to "stepping out"?

Guard Your Mind

Your mind is the first battlefield. Procrastination, wandering thoughts, and "what-if" scenarios are the tools of the enemy to keep you small. You have to intentionally direct your thinking toward possibility rather than limitation. This isn't just "positive thinking"; it’s biblical mind-renewal.

Practice Boldness in One Area

You don’t have to transform your entire life by Monday morning. Start with constraint. Pick one area where you’ve been holding back: maybe it’s a conversation you need to have, a boundary you need to set, or a project you’ve been sitting on: and be brave there. Once you see that you can survive the discomfort of being bold in one area, it becomes easier to apply that courage elsewhere.

Prioritize Obedience Over Comfort

We often pray for God to make us feel "ready" before we take a step. But in the Kingdom, clarity usually follows obedience. If you wait until you feel comfortable to step into your calling, you will be waiting forever. Pursuing comfort actually creates more anxiety than moving forward does. Step out in faith, even if your knees are knocking.

Ask Yourself the Hard Questions

To get moving, you need to be honest with yourself. Sit down with a journal and ask:

  • Where am I holding back because I’m afraid of what people will think?
  • Am I fully investing in the strengths God gave me, or am I trying to hide them so I don’t stand out?
  • Where have I avoided growth because I’m afraid of the responsibility that comes with success?

If you find yourself stuck on these questions, it’s okay. We all need a guide sometimes to help us see the blind spots that are keeping us small.

A Place to Start

Stepping into your calling is rarely a solo journey. It requires community, mentorship, and a deep dive into the areas where you've been "broken" so that God can use those very pieces to build something new.

If you are tired of playing small and you’re ready to finally step into the "more" that God has for you, I want to invite you to join us. We offer spiritual coaching specifically designed for the woman who knows she is standing on the edge of something big but needs the tools and the faith to jump.

We also have a vibrant community where we walk through these breaking seasons together. You don't have to figure out your calling in isolation. Sometimes, seeing someone else step out is the exact permission you need to do the same.

The 3-Day Intensive

If you are ready for a concentrated, deep-dive shift, I want to personally invite you to our 3-Day Intensive.

This isn't just a workshop; it's a dedicated space to dismantle the barriers that have kept you playing small. We spend three days digging into your unique design, identifying the specific fears that are sidelining you, and creating a practical, faith-based roadmap for you to step into your calling.

You weren't meant to live in the winepress. It’s time to move to the hilltop. Whether you need prayer or a push, we are here to help you rise.

Stop playing small. The world is waiting for the version of you that God already sees.
